PTSD Q & A

What does PTSD do to the brain?

Research shows that the amygdala, the part of your brain that sets off your body’s internal alarm system, is overactive in people with PTSD. In addition, the prefrontal cortex, which is like the body’s braking system, is often underactive.

This blend of unhealthy brain activity is what leads to disruptive and frustrating PTSD symptoms, such as:

  • Nightmares, flashbacks, and other re-experiencing symptoms
  • Social withdrawal
  • Feeling agitated, anxious, and on guard constantly
  • Reacting strongly to minor things
  • Trouble with memory
  • Poor concentration
  • Loss of interest in usual hobbies and activities

People with PTSD suffer severely, and it prevents them from living the life they deserve. PTSD also affects the lives of loved ones and can cause serious damage to relationships.

What is MeRT for PTSD?

MeRT is a PTSD treatment that corrects chaotic brain waves and improves brain function using magnetic pulses. This treatment is built on the foundation of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an FDA-approved therapy that delivers magnetic pulses to the brain.

TMS releases steady magnetic pulses according to a preset pattern, and it affects one specific area in the brain.

MeRT uses electroencephalograms (EEGs), aka brain scans, and electrocardiograms (EKGs), aka heart scans, to better understand your inherent alpha frequency (brain waves).

Wholesome Therapy Center customizes MeRT based on your brain’s specific needs, which allows it to be more specific to each person than standard TMS.

MeRT doesn’t require medications or invasive treatments. Most patients say treatments are pain-free, and sessions last only about 30 minutes in the beautiful Wholesome Therapy Group office.

What are the results of MeRT for PTSD?

TMS is extensively documented as an effective therapy for people with PTSD, and it’s an FDA-approved therapy for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A recent meta-analysis of many PTSD studies showed that TMS is a highly effective treatment.

For this reason, TMS and its more advanced version (MeRT), are often used off-label to treat PTSD. MeRT can reduce daily stress, improve sleep, stabilize emotions, boost cognitive processing, and ultimately enhance whole-body wellness*.

MeRT offers transformative results for people with PTSD, especially veterans, and is also an effective therapy for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other conditions like depression, anxiety, autism, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
